Because being older does not mean having no value

Down Syndrome doesn’t BEGIN to define this child!

My cousin’s grandchild was a beautiful baby. Yet as she grew, people used names for her and said things about her that no child or adult should have to hear in order to project their warped ideas of perfection onto her. Slow. Retarded. What’s wrong with her? Why does she look like that? Why can’t she talk yet?

Well, she’s about 5 1/2 years old now. Retarded? She’s more comfortable with sign language, but she otherwise has no problem letting you know what she wants and when she wants it. Slow? That kid can scatter like ants at a picnic when she doesn’t want to do something. She likes to sweep. And when I saw her last summer, she was still a beautiful kid. Just bigger. My wish for her is a life of love and laughter in a world that is more tolerant of perceived imperfections.

Let me tell you something. My baby cousin is an imperfect kid in an imperfect world. Aren’t we all?! Show me a person that hasn’t got anything about them anybody else can criticize, and I will show you God.
