World of Entertainment: Hollywood’s Greatest Musicals. Wonder who this guy Ralph is who autographed this book? To say nothing of the Dahl
I saw the movie Red Tails this past Friday. Was Red Tails better than the made-for-HBO film on the Tuskegee Airmen? I have no idea because I have never had cable TV, and I know there are others like me in that regard.
I thought the story of the indignity of these men, the humanity of these men, some of them barely kids, was well portrayed. And the flight scenes were dazzling. So exciting to see black pilots in aerial combat. Surely executive producer George Lucas was more than just the banker and perhaps shared with director Anthony Hemingway how to craft exciting fight scenes!
And of course it’s obvious this drive to urge people to see the movie transcends how good the film may or may not be. It’s to send a message to the studios who refused to even CONSIDER it solely due to the lead cast members’ color.
If it had just been a matter of simply saying to the producer or screenwriter (or however these movies are shopped to the studios) that no, this is a bad script, or the writing’s bad & we don’t want to stick our necks out on this, then yes, Red Tails would have deserved to have been sent back to the drawing board so to speak. But to refuse to even consider it! For every studio in town to refuse to even consider it - why? Because of the all-black cast and the subject matter, well, that just chapped my hide, and I applaud Mr. Lucas for paying for set, actor’s salaries (including that of an Oscar nominee and an Oscar winner), CGI, production, props, and the rest of it; for being willing to risk losing every penny of the money he invested to see that this film got made and these heroic men’s story got told.
Personally, I not only enjoyed this film, I’m going to buy the DVD, and I hope George Lucas recoups his money and then some (and licenses some cool Tuskeegee Airmen action figures for the kids). I say “f*ck you” to the studio heads who refused this movie for the wrong reason. With tears streaming down my face, I applauded with the rest of the people in the packed AMC theater in Oklahoma City when they rolled the credits. That a few white reviewers didn’t like the movie is HARDLY my concern. They don’t do my thinking for me, they don’t spend my money for me, they don’t tell me who I want to see in the theaters and neither do the Hollywood studio heads. This weekend, I and I hope many, many others are the ones telling THEM.
Go see Red Tails and make up your own mind for less than the cost of a pack of cigarettes.
Please go support the this amazing movie and cast. I’ve been a George Lucas fan my entire life Im so happy to see him make this kind of movie starring one of my closest friends Elijah Kelley.
Hollywood snubbed this film. Let’s show them who we are and support this movie. Yes, we can! Courage HAS no color.
