Janet Jackson, circa 1990. It just doesn’t seem that long ago to me.

Almost done with Janet. Sadly, my camera isn’t capturing the intensity of the coloring. :-( But I’m really pleased with what I was able to do with it. First time attempting a drawing of a black person with it. Our skin tones lend themselves well to this medium. I’m going to find a darker person to draw.
Oil pastels offers it’s own set of challenges as compared to colored pencil. But, I’m not sure if I’m ready to sell my colored pencil collection though. Some of the Prismacolor colors I have have been discontinued for years! On the other hand if I want an art supply store I guess I need to be prepared to sell off inventory! We take nothing with us, after all.

In the meantime, Janet is looking a lot better after her nose job. I have to make sure I don’t give her too much definition though because I can age her beyond what is intended! The Jacksons all developed that chiseled bone structure when they matured into middle age. Want to keep a little baby fat on young Janet.

Janet Jackson - why is she not a major motion picture star?! The black Elizabeth Taylor!

This is proving difficult. It’s the first time I’ve attempted a portrait of an African-American other than my baby cousin’s portrait. And it’s hard to mess up a baby because you’re not that concerned with likeness. This isn’t perfect, I know, but I hope there’s enough information there for someone to figure out who this is. This is a 1980s hairstyle on this, and it’s hard to make the baby hair look natural!

JJ’s starting to take shape; I like how she’s turning out. I want to show the beauty of Black people in my work.

Beautiful ladies! Yashi Brown (Austin Brown’s big sister) and the infamous Ms. Jackson (the nasty one)!
