Not again…

I had a very unproductive day yesterday. Completely gobsmacked. It seems to be another nail in the coffin of my childhood and young adulthood. It started with Luther Vandross, whose death left me nonfunctional for several weeks. Then Michael Jackson, who took me COMPLETELY by surprise with his transitioning, as in last thing in the world I ever expected in a million billion years. Then after a while more and more of the people who engineered the musical and reality-based escapism I had enjoyed my childhood and young adulthood started disappearing with shocking regularity. The latest was Whitney, then yesterday’s news came. I can’t help but feel this foreboding sense of abandonment by these people¬† - not known personally, yet as much a part of my DNA as my skin color - and it just makes me sick. Sometimes I wish they would take me with them.

I’m so glad I discovered Donna Summer’s last album, Crayons, during a sale at Circuit City a few years ago just before they went out of business. Listen to that, and you understand that Donna was so much more than a disco queen. She sings reggae, pop, even some blues! Nothing at all one-dimensional. It’s the only Donna Summer CD that I own, and I think that due to its eclectic nature it’s quite a fitting legacy for her. So this week I mourn. Again. Another great and distinctive voice has been stilled.

Donna Summer’s last album Crayons (2008). Song list: Stamp Your Feet; Mr. Music; Crayons; The Queen Is Back; Fame (The Game); Sand On My Feet; Drivin’ Down Brazil; I’m A Fire; Slide Over Backwards; Science of Love; Be Myself Again; Bring Down the Reign; It’s Only Love; I’m A Fire (Baggi Begovic & Soul Conspiracy Mixshow Remix). You got the extra track if you bought the CD from Circuit City - it was exclusive. Total running time 1:03:20
She gave you your money’s worth, just like Michael Jackson did with his last album. Even though it’s long, it most certainly is not TOO long, except for those with painfully short attention spans, in which case I’m not talking to you. Gonna miss you Donna, but at least I’ve got your music. Music keeps me company. Music is my baby.

I thought Donna Summer’s “Mr. Music”, aka “I Love Music”¬† would be a fitting tribute to the late Steve Jobs since she references his most famous invention, the iPod. “Hooked up my iPod, shake my body…” It’s also a pretty good tribute to disc jockeys everywhere who help us all get through the day! From Donna’s wonderful 2008 CD “Crayons”.

Donna Summer singing I’m A Fire. I hope I look that good in 10 years! If you are lucky enough to have snagged the Circuit City version of Donna Summer’s "Crayons" from 2006, then you know this smokin’ song is on there in TWO version, regular and a crazy dance mix that puts you absolutely in a trance! It’s awesome, as is the whole album. You have to know that Donna Summer is more than disco, and I hate that people missed this album.

Getting Healthy

I just walked 3 miles in step to the music of Michael Jackson, The Bee Gees, Cee Lo Green, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, and Donna Summer. Now I’m eating a McDonald’s salad I bought 3 days ago and kept in the fridge. Cooking my soaked chickpeas in the broth I made with the chicken drumsticks I boiled and baked yesterday.

Tired.
