samsketch: I’ve noticed that the e-mails and “ask” messages that I get seem to have trends. Lately, the trend has been that people are very interested in my studio space. Let me preface this post by saying what I always say whenever people ask me about my tools or my studio or anything not having to do with actually drawing - tools do not an artist make (see #9). Okay, now that I’ve gotten that disclaimer out of the way, this is my studio! I’m lucky enough to live in one of those older L.A. apartments that actually has a dining room, and the dining room has become my studio. It’s so nice to have a room dedicated to work - in my previous apartment I had all my equipment in the living room and it was crowded to say the least. I have two work stations - on the left a computer desk where I do all my digital drawing. My cintiq is actually tucked away in one of the desk drawers (I have a cat who likes play dangerously close to my computer equipment), but you can see my laptop and my ancient second screen (which has now become a business card and post-it holder). To the right of the computer desk is a small coffee-table-turned-print/scan-station with my scanner (Microtek ScanMaker i900) and my printer (Epson Stylus R2400). To the right of that is one of my most prized art-making possessions: my electric drafting table. Don’t bother asking me where I got it - I inherited it from my mother who is a photographer, and she inherited it from a friend (another photographer). It is super awesome, and has saved my back and my posture from certain hunch-backed-ness. I blurred out some of the stuff I’m working on that is posted on the drafting table because it’s for work and therefore TOP SECRET. Just kidding. Sort of. Hopefully this answers everyone’s questions. This, as they say on Cribs, is where the magic happens. (Bow-chicka-wow-wow.) World’s darkest drawing studio. I personally like my light from the left since I’m right handed. I will say while I no longer print from my home, I like the idea of a coffee table as a scanning table. Office furniture is just so…blah!

  10. chadilaksono said: whoa it’s so cool that you dedicated a whole room for working. I work on an 18x24 wood board, on the floor. I put my laptop, painting stuff, etc on there, and I crouch over to paint. I shud be more dedicated like u. Where in LA do u live anyway?
  11. guessworks said: A cubby! why did I never think of it?! Also, I like the use of a corner so you can easily swivel/glide from one area to the other. Really nice design considerations to make your workspace work for you, not against.
